Masanga Family and its Friends |
| In the past you have shown involvement with Masanga Hospital. That’s fantastic! The Masanga Family appreciates that very much. Thanks to the commitment of people like you, the hospital was able to treat more than 12,000 patients last year. Are you curious about more statistics and background about Masanga in 2022? |
| | Poverty and resilience As you probably know, Masanga’s patients are among the poorest in the world. | | Whereas Siërra Leone is amongst the poorest countries in the world, The Netherlands is known to be one of the best places to live worldwide. The infographic below lists a few differences: |
| | | | Dr. Wouter Run Last December, the staff members of Masanga ran their annual 10 kilometer run, in memory of Wouter Nolet. This raised no less than € 25,000! A wonderful amount, that benefits the running costs of the hospital. Did you sponsor the Dr. Wouter Run? That’s great! Thanks to your donation, hungry mouths have been fed and patients have received the care they needed. All proceeds from the run went directly to the people of Masanga. Train the Trainer Last winter, nurse specialist Jenny Groen set up a pilot of a Train the Trainer program for nurses in Masanga. On the one hand, the results were worrying: prior to a training, (too) many nurses scored insufficiently on essential professional knowledge such as medical arithmetic and interpreting vital signs. The importance of further training of (and by) local nurses proves all the more crucial. The pilot showed that the training is a successful tool: afterwards, the scores increase enormously, and with it the quality of care! AFAS support Thanks to generous sponsors such as the AFAS Foundation, we have been able to realize many improvements in and around the hospital. This video gives an impression of the impact of AFAS. Plenti tenki to AFAS and all donors who make the life-saving work in Masanga possible! Growth in quality and quantity In recent years, the hospital has grown very fast: admissions, diagnoses, operations, deliveries: all show an upward trend. The treatments and surgeries are not only increasing in number, but also in complexity. And with that, our skills are growing as well. We are getting more and more patients being referred from all over the country for complex bone fractures, bone infections, and for complex abdominal surgeries. Maternity Outreach Programme Thanks to the Wouter Nolet Foundation, an outreach program has been started since September 2022, in which high risk pregnancies are identified in time and the pregnant women are referred to Masanga, in order to give birth safely. In this way, it contributes to reducing maternal mortality and helping healthy babies in the world. And so we can continue to list positive developments in Masanga. But it’s probably better if you see it with your own eyes: Last March, Bernhard Rodenburg, filmmaker at Radboud UMC, made a video in which you can see the strength, potential and challenges of the hospital. |
| | | Progress Masanga Hospital Rehabilitation Project (MHRP) |
| The local management of Masanga Hospital is actively lobbying in Freetown to motivate the government to gradually take over the (costs for) the hospital, as set out in the Masanga Hospital Rehabilitation Project (2006-2026). Although the government is reluctant to motivate and provide resources, we are confident that a number of staff members will be pin coded to the governmental payroll in time. |
| | “Over the past year, we have worked closely with the government. This is a difficult process, but we are hopeful that we will soon see an increase in government support, financially and also in terms of staff on the government payroll. We know that the economic situation in the country is very challenging, which is why we are happy, even with the small steps that are being taken, and we will not give up, until we succeed”.
